uPBT (Ubiquitous PBT Substance)
A substance that is Ubiquitous, Persistent, Bioaccumulative and Toxic — found everywhere in the aquatic environment due to widespread historical use.
Ubiquitous Persistent, Bioaccumulative and Toxic substance. A stricter classification than PBT. These substances are so widespread in EU waters that concentrations cannot be attributed to single point-source discharges. Monitoring may use biota or sediment rather than water alone. Reduced monitoring frequency is permitted — as a guideline, at least every 3 years — because concentrations change slowly.
