Neonicotinoids
A class of systemic insecticides widely used in agriculture — several are listed as EU priority substances due to toxicity to aquatic invertebrates.
A class of systemic insecticide acting on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Neonicotinoids are highly water-soluble and persistent, making them a significant risk to aquatic invertebrates via agricultural run-off. EU priority substance neonicotinoids listed in Directive (EU) 2026/805: Acetamiprid (No.48), Clothianidin (No.54), Imidacloprid (No.62), Thiacloprid (No.67), and Thiamethoxam (No.68). Imidacloprid was previously on the EU watchlist.
