BAT (Best Available Techniques)
Reference standards for industrial pollution control — companies must document BAT use to demonstrate compliance with the polluter-pays principle.
Best Available Techniques. The most effective and advanced techniques and methods of operation which demonstrate the practical suitability of measures to limit discharges of pollutants. BAT Reference Documents (BREFs) are published for each major industrial sector by the European IPPC Bureau. Companies regulated under the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) must implement BAT and can demonstrate compliance via BAT-AELs (Associated Emission Levels). Relevant to water compliance when substance discharges are being managed at source.
